This shot was taken by Phil Catleugh at Windermere this year.Last weekend meant another bumper-to-bumper series of displays for the Yakovlevs, as they gave a four-ship display at the Silverstone Circuit, followed by a cross-country transit for displays over the beautiful scenery of Windermere, and RAF Woodvale.

Silverstone was opened as a World War Two airfield in 1943. Five years later, Silverstone's first racing event took place; the RAC Grand Prix. The crowds came in their thousands that year, and this year the turnout was great as well at the 2008 Silverstone Classic event, where the Yaks gave their four-ship display. The Yakovlevs are looking forward to a repeat performance next year. The team would like also to give a big thank you to everyone who made the team’s stay so enjoyable at Woodvale over the weekend, after a hard day of displaying. The Yaks attracted quite a crowd, both during and after their display on their second day, and the pilots were given a great night out to celebrate as well.

Opened in 1941, RAF Woodvale was originally built as a night fighter station built to defend Liverpool. Today many of its original buildings are still there, and one of its original hangars is still in operation. RAF Woodvale is now home to the University Air Squadrons of Manchester and Liverpool, as well as local flying clubs and the Merseyside Police Air Support Group, to name a few.

Windermere proved to be another great venue for the team, that attracted big numbers of people and featured attractions as diverse as the Silverband Falcons hunting birds display, as well as the Lakeland Mountain Rescue Dogs.

The airshow was hosted by the Rotary Club of Windermere, part of Rotary International, a world-wide organisation of clubs whose members are all active in service of their communities, attracting members from all sorts of backgrounds. All members are, or were, self employed or in decision-making positions within their employment. Click here to find out more about Windermere Airshow.

The summer is already winding down, but the team won’t be slowing down any time soon. Keep your eye on our events calendar on the website, for more updates on what the Yakovlevs will be doing next.
